Pottery classes...

We have several pottery classes for adults, and family classes for children to come along to with or without their parents. These classes are designed to cater for all abilities, from complete beginners to advanced students. Forgan boasts three wonderful pottery tutors: Pat Peters, Heather Gilbert and Irene Coulthard

PAT has been teaching for many years at both Waid Academy and Forgan Arts Centre. Pat is a highly qualified and experienced potter with a wealth of knowledge in both wheel work and hand building. Pat will teach you everything you need to know from creating a piece, to adding texture and pattern or perfecting the finish of your ceramics.

HEATHER holds a BA (HONS) in Fine Art, and has been teaching locally for over 15 years, and covers all methods of making, from hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching and slab work, to throwing pots on the wheel. She will be on hand to give demonstrations and advice and you will learn about the different glazing methods and techniques you can use to create your finished work.

IRENE returns to her pottery roots to teach a variety of decorative ceramic techniques complimenting the regular day and evening pottery classes at Forgan Arts Centre. Irene taught slip casting and painting techniques and wrote monthly articles for a popular crafts magazine showing step by step instructions on how to cast, fire and decorate ceramic items.

Along the way there will be an additional minimal firing cost, which is dependent on the size of your work. Clay can be purchased from the Centre or you can practice with recycling clay.

Irene taught slip casting and painting techniques and wrote monthly articles for a popular crafts magazine showing step by step instructions on how to cast, fire and decorate ceramic items.

Irene teaches weekend workshops at Forgan in a variety of decorative application methods to use in pottery such as design transfer, sgraffito and Mishima techniques.

Keep an eye on our Facebook page for her pop up workshops during the term!

EXAMPLE OF A POTTERY TECHNIQUES WORKSHOP:

MISHIMA FISH PLAQUE AND PINCH POT ANIMAL

This workshop will show how to transfer designs to green ware (unfired clay). You will decorate a flat plaque along with a sculpted pinch pot animal using the Japanese Mishima technique of inlaying underglaze into a contrasting clay body.

You will be taught to carve and colour your pieces before their final glazing, learning about the many steps and processes involved in creating pottery.

Suitable for those who dabble in pottery, looking to add some decorative techniques to their ceramic skills.

Final pieces can be collected from the Centre 2 weeks after the workshop.
