Pottery classes...

We have several pottery classes for adults, and family classes for children to come along to with or without their parents. These classes are designed to cater for all abilities, from complete beginners to advanced students. Forgan boasts three wonderful pottery tutors: Pat Peters, Heather Gilbert and Irene Coulthard

PAT has been teaching for many years at both Waid Academy and Forgan Arts Centre. Pat is a highly qualified and experienced potter with a wealth of knowledge in both wheel work and hand building. Pat will teach you everything you need to know from creating a piece, to adding texture and pattern or perfecting the finish of your ceramics.

HEATHER holds a BA (HONS) in Fine Art, and has been teaching locally for over 15 years, and covers all methods of making, from hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching and slab work, to throwing pots on the wheel. She will be on hand to give demonstrations and advice and you will learn about the different glazing methods and techniques you can use to create your finished work.

IRENE returns to her pottery roots to teach a variety of decorative ceramic techniques complimenting the regular day and evening pottery classes at Forgan Arts Centre. Irene taught slip casting and painting techniques and wrote monthly articles for a popular crafts magazine showing step by step instructions on how to cast, fire and decorate ceramic items.

Along the way there will be an additional minimal firing cost, which is dependent on the size of your work. Clay can be purchased from the Centre or you can practice with recycling clay.

POTTERY TECHNIQUES- SLIP CASTING  CLASSES

FOR THOSE WITH SOME POTTERY EXPERIENCE: with Irene Coulthard

These weekly classes are suitable for those who currently attend our pottery classes or make pottery at home, and who are looking to add some new techniques to their ceramic skills! Using liquid slip, students will work with the centres supply of plaster molds to learn how to slip cast, recreating a positive of the mold in ceramic. Once dried, you will then learn how to work on the greenware (unfired dry clay) to decorate your ceramic pieces using slip-trailing techniques. Irene is on hand to share advice, hints, demonstrations and tips to guide you through the process. Materials and firing are included in the course price. If you have any existing pottery tools, please bring your tool kit with you. A limited amount will be available to share at the Centre.
